Iwi gets seat on Kerikeri school board

The Ngāti Rēhia representative on Kerikeri High School’s board of trustees says she wants all pupils to learn about the area’s Mana Whenua
Waimarie Muunu, who teaches in the bilingual unit at Kerikeri Primary, is the first person appointed to the position.
She says Te Rūnanga o Ngāti Rēhia has a history of supporting the kura, and it’s keen for all students to become familiar with their takiwā.
“That’s our moemoea, every child, it doesn’t matter what ethnic group you are, if you live and attend schools within Ngāti Rēhia you will know some history and reo of Ngāti Rēhia,” she says.
Waimarie Muunu says Ngati Rehia’s support for the Kerikeri High School includes helping with a powhiri each year for new entrants, and hosting students at Whitiora Marae to teach them local tikanga.
