Hospitals coping despite Covid death spike
New Zealand had its deadliest day with Covid yesterday, but the Health Ministry’s deputy director Māori says the system is still coping.
John Whaanga says many of the 35 reported deaths happened during the previous week but got added to the systems once post-mortem test results came in.
He says hospitalisation rates are going up around the country as the Omicron wave spreads, but they are still within manageable limits.
“Well over 90 percent of those who have had Covid have managed themselves in their own homes and I think that’s off the back of a very strong vaccination effort too,” he says.
Mr Whaanga says attention is turning to the winter immunisation campaigns, and there is now a larger vaccination workforce to call on because of Covid.
