Dame June Jackson had vision for Māori future
Ngāi Tahu leader Tā Tipene O’Regan says the late Dame Temuranga June Jackson had charisma and vision.
The former Manukau Urban Māori Authority head died this morning after a long illness.
She was 82.
She served with Tā Tipene on the Treaty of Waitangi Fisheries Commission, after fighting him as far as the Privy Council to have urban Māori recognized in the Māori fisheries settlement.
He says she became a good friend to his wife Lady Sandra and himself.
Tā Tipene says she had a great breadth of view.
“She had a measure of charisma which commanded attention and she was able to think of where we were going and what we wanted to be as people. She understood that. I’ve been saddened by her recent decline. All I can do at my stage of life is hope the journey she is on will be one which brings her rest,” he says.
Dame Temuranga June Batley Jackson is being taken from Taumarunui to Mōkau Marae tonight, and then to Ngā Whare Waatea Marae in Mangere.
