Pūtea problem for Māori housing plan

A Northland iwi leader says finance is the most critical aspect for any Māori housing programme.
Te Rarawa chief executive George Riley took part in last week’s MAIHI housing wānanga at Waitangi, in which iwi leaders, housing advocates and Government ministers reviewed the current state of the Māori housing policy.
He says Māori have the land and the skills to build houses, but they’re held back by problems with getting banks to lend money, especially on projects on multiply-owned land.
“Part of our kōrero on Friday was about enablement – how the crown might come together with us to put a fund together and possibly bring in some philanthropists,” Mr Riley says.
He says the 1000 homes to be funded in the MAIHI Māori housing strategy would barely scratch the surface of the need in Taitokerau, let alone the rest of the country.
