Local control used to hammer Three Waters plan
National Party leader Christopher Luxon says proposed changes to the Three Waters reforms don’t fix the fundamental problems.
A working group of mayors and iwi representatives has proposed changes to the plan to manage the country’s fresh water, wastewater and stormwater infrastructure, including having the shares in the new regional entities owned by councils, iwi being 50-50 at the governance table and making te mana o te wai the foundation principle.
Mr Luxon says that won’t be enough to convince the councils who currently own the assets.
“If you are a resident or a ratepayer you have paid for these assets over 30 to 50 years, the pipes and all that stuff around stormwater, wastewater and drinking water. The problem with that is those assets are being taken away and there is no local control anymore and that is what people are reacting to two on Three Waters as a major issue,” he says.
