Women’s mental health boon for whānau
It’s International Women’s Day and psychiatrist Dr Hinemoa Elder says it’s a good day to acknowledge how important wahine Māori are to the health of the whole whānau.
She says working in Starship’s baby unit she sees what can go wrong, not just with the health of pepe but with the mental health of māmā.
“If we could really address maternal mental health in our communities and we had the right resources and the right skill set and we were actually able to bring our mātauranga Māori into those spaces then we would do a huge amount of benefit for the wider whānau and everyone’s mental health,” Dr Elder says.
She says more investment in women’s mental health benefits the whole whānau.
