Plea to exclude Tāmaki Makaurau from DHB strike
Counties Manukau’s Chief Medical Officer of Health wants the Public Service Association to leave Tāmaki Makaurau out of tomorrow’s planned national strike.
The Employment Court is today considering a request from DHBs for an injunction against the strike by as many as 10,000 staff including radiographers, physiotherapists, pharmacists, security guards, orderlies and cleaners.
Almost three-quarters of the 120,000 plus active Covid cases are in the super city.
Dr Andrew Connelly says Middlemore is already bearing the brunt of the Omicron surge, and there’s a precedent with unions leaving Christchurch out of industrial action during the earthquake recovery.
“Hopefully they may be able to do the same for us because that will add significantly to our challenges tomorrow but again we have got the plans in place on what it means for caring for patients if the strike goes ahead,” he says.
Dr Connelly says he’s in awe of how staff in all sectors of the workforce are doing their mahi during a time of great stress and anxiety.
