Reti warms to snow haka

National’s Māori spokesperson Shane Reti says it was great to see a haka in the snow at the Winter Olympics.
The ragged haka by members of the New Zealand team to celebrate Nico Porteus’s gold in the men’s halfpipe skiing in Tokyo drew some fire on talkback.
But Dr Reti says the haka is an appropriate way to celebrate New Zealand’s record medal haul in a way that expresses national identity.
“I don’t at all besmirch those who give it their best effort with genuine intent, purpose and appropriateness for doing a haka overseas so pleased with that,” he says.
Dr Reti says he’d like to see other ways New Zealanders can assert their national identity when overseas.
