Award for kaupapa Māori approach to health and safety

A Whangārei-based company with a kaupapa Māori approach to health and safety has won an ACC workplace injury prevention award.
ACC business partnerships head Adam Jennings says a large percentage of North Drill’s 50-strong workforce are Māori.
He says it sets an example for others to follow, as ACC is trying to increase the focus on prevention rather than stepping in after accidents.
“They were treating health and safety as a really effective way of working rather than mere compliance with tick box activity. That approach of incorporating the needs of themselves as a business or employees and a community meant that they weren’t following the standard blueprint”, he says.
Adam Jennings says safety is about making sure employees return home at the end of the day to their whānau.
