Māori perspectives on retirement sought
The Retirement Commission is trying to identify disparities and difficulties faced by Māori as they look to support themselves in their twilight years.
It’s doing an online survey backed up by long interviews, which will feed into its three-yearly Retirement Income Review.
Te Ara Ahunga Ora Retirement Commission kaihautū Kathie Irwin says on average Māori will earn less through their working lives, meaning they have fewer resources to draw on when work ends.
The situation is likely to get even worse, given current social and economic conditions.
“Too many of our older people are facing homelessness issues, housing crisis issues, and we want to be able to tell the story to the Government directly, from our people’s stories about what retirement is looking like right now,” Dr Irwin says.
The disparity in the percentage of Māori actually reaching retirement age will also be considered.
