MP reveals push to pray the gay away

In response to parliament last night passing the third reading of a Bill banning conversion therapy, East Coast MP Kiritapu Allen has revealed that as a 16-year-old she had been subjected by her church to an effort to pray the gay away.
In a Facebook post, she says it took a long time to shake that shame and trauma, and she’s relieved for the next generation of babies the practice is now banned.
Justice Minister Kris Faafoi says trying to change someone’s sexual orientation has no place in modern New Zealand.
He says the bill drew almost 107,000 public submissions – the highest number of ever received on a piece of legislation in New Zealand.
