Hiakai gets whā pōtae status
A Wellington restaurant that aims to make Māori cuisine a fine dining experience has been awarded the top mark of three hats at this year’s Cuisine Good Food Awards.
Hiakai also was rated best specialist restaurant and founder Monique Fiso took the tohu of Cuisine Chef of the Year.
Ms Fiso says it’s a dream come true – and marks a new stage in the restaurant’s evolution.
“I said to my partner, now that I’ve got three hats and we’ve ticked that box and achieved that goal, I just want to have fun. Instead of stressing out to get three hats, I’m like, ‘OK, we’ve done it, let’s just have fun,'” she says.
