Whānau Ora uses audit to challenge bureaucrats
The chief executive of the South Island Whānau Ora Commissioning Agency Te Pūtahitanga o Te Waipounamu says government departments are slow to embrace whānau ora processes.
Providers have been meeting with the Office of the Auditor-General this week to look over their books and review their relationship with government departments.
Helen Leahy says all providers have told the auditors they believe in what they are doing, but they find government agencies are unwilling to give them the resources and help they need.
“If there was support from government it tended to be based on personalities more than it does on a system-wide approach and they want to see government engage better. There’s every reason for the government to see the differences being made. All they need to do is have faith in the process,” she says.
