Māori Pride festival builds on work of elders
Auckland PRIDE’s Te Tīmatanga Māori festival is to go ahead with a reduced event schedule because of Covid settings.
It includes a mix of online and public exhibitions, with eight public artworks spread through the central city.
Kaiwhakahaere takatāpui Hamiora Bailey says there’s a particular emphasis on marking the 50 years since Auckland’s first Gay Liberation march.
“We have, because of our elders really been able to assert ourselves with more freedom in this space as mokopuna from that movement. I do think there in Tāmaki Makaurau, in this city we have an opportunity to show it but there is still so much work to be done around the motu to enable our mokopuna to arrive into themselves earlier,” he says.
