Return land to hapū say Greens
The Green Party’s Te Mātāwaka caucus is calling for a rethink of the treaty settlement process to include private land.
It has released a discussion document, Hoki Whenua Mai, proposing the Waitangi Tribunal be allowed to review settlements to ensure adequacy of redress.
It wants the Government to establish a Hoki Whenua Mai fund to help whānau and hapū reacquire lost land when it comes up on the private market.
It also envisages rewriting to Public Works Act to allow the crown to buy raupatu land and then return it.
Co-leader Marama Davidson says returning land to tangata whenua is the right thing to do to address the ongoing injustice Māori experience.
