Acceptance of Māori point of view growing
A Māori politics lecturer says New Zealanders regardless of their background are becoming more sympathetic to Māori rights.
Dr Lara Greaves from the University of Auckland says it’s reflected in the quieter tone at Waitangi Day commemorations in recent years.
She says it’s a generational shift.
“We’re seeing more broader acceptance of where Māori are coming from in the discourse, just in the white stream of the discourse. I think that that’s part of it as well and that’s people have a lot of sympathies and are a lot more interested in Māori political issues and the Maori point of view on things,” Dr Greaves says.
She’s keen to see if National’s new leader Christopher Luxon soft pedals Waitangi Day or whether he uses it to appeal to different voter blocs,
