Holdup to Te Ātiawa settlement cleared

Work has resumed demolishing the remains of the old Barrett St hospital in New Plymouth.
Toitū Te Whenua Land Information New Zealand, which manages the 7.6-hectare site on behalf of the Crown, started the demolition in 2016 but stopped in 2018 when larger than anticipated amounts of asbestos were discovered.
It has now secured the resource consent required to remove the contaminated material.
Te Kōtahitanga o Te Ātiawa has a first right of refusal once the site is cleared.
Project manager Matt Bradley says a former nurses’ home, Dawson St gates and brick wall will remain on site as they are heritage listings in the district plan.
He says once the stockpiles and the non-heritage buildings are removed, LINZ will work with Ngāti Te Whiti hapū, Te Kōtahitanga o Te Ātiawa and its environmental consultants to determine if any more work is required to prepare the site.”
