Rewana welcome as tough times loom
Aroha and manaakitanga will be key to getting through the next phase of the Covid pandemic, according to the country’s top Māori cop.
Deputy Police Commissioner Wally Haumaha says 98 per cent of police are now vaccinated, and he’s confident they will be able to keep up with any demands placed on them.
He says the example set by his neighbours when he moved into a new whare at the weekend is the sort of behaviour he wants to see more of.
“They came in, they brought a rewana bread, so when you’ve got people like that who show the hand of manaaki, Aroha, and that’s what I expect of our police staff, to go out there understanding there are tough times in our community,” Mr Haumaha says.
