Te Whakatōhea initialled their Deed of Settlement this week – a major milestone which will see the East Coast iwi ratify their settlement next year.
However, Te Upokorehe opposes the settlement and recently presented a petition of more than 700 signatures to withdraw their iwi members from the deal. It says the Crown will be in breach of the Treaty of Waitangi if this week’s signing goes ahead.
