Iwi bless City Mission papakainga
Mana whenua have blessed Auckland City Mission’s new Home Ground development on Hobson St.
Te Rūnanga o Ngāti Whātua chief executive Antony Thompson says both Ngāti Whātua Ōrākei and the wider iwi have long standing relationships with the Mission, contributing hauora suport and referring people for help.
The 10-storey centre, which could be open as early as February, includes a ground floor pharmacy, kitchen and meeting rooms, two floors for alcohol and drug detox and respite care run by Auckland District Health Board, a papakainga of six floors of apartments which will be managed by various social housing providers, and two administration floors.
“The building itself is a whānau ora unit. It’s a one stop shop dedicated to not just walk-ins but long term recovery of our whānau,” Mr Thompson says.
