Music funder happy with Tui haul
The head of Māori broadcast funding agency Te Māngai Pāho says the success of Māori artists at this year’s Aotearoa Music Awards highlights the effectiveness of music as a vehicle for cultural revitalisation.
Māori acts including L.A.B., Teeks and Six60 took away many of the major Tuis, and te reo Māori was integrated seamlessly into the awards ceremony, which was hosted by Hayley Sproull & Stan Walker and broadcast live without an audience because of Covid restrictions.
Larry Parr says it highlighted how the whole of Aotearoa has embraced Māori music.
“Obviously hats off to those who opened the new path – (Dame) Hinewehi (Mohi), Tā Tīmoti (Karetu) and ērā atu … I think for a long time we’ve under-estimated the value of music to the revitalisation space,” Mr Parr says.
