Maketū wānanga preparing for climate change

Rising tides and super-hot summers are in the future for the Te Arawa coastal outpost of Maketū – and the residents want to prepare.
Te Rūnanga o Ngāti Whakaue ki Maketū has secured $15,000 from Bay of Plenty Regional Council’s climate change adaption fund to run a series of wānanga to understand likely problems and develop an action plan.
Kaiwhakahaere Roana Bennett says one of its two marae and at least 40 homes are at risk from rising sea levels.
They expect extremely hot summers could be fatal for some residents without air conditioning.
Roana Bennett says iwi are well placed to lead on climate issues because of their environmental and inter-generational perspectives and their ability to bring people together and lead in times of crisis.
