Welfare reform good start for Covid help

Three years after the release of the Welfare Expert Advisory Group report, which has largely sat on the shelf, a group member is calling for a comprehensive overhaul of Working for Families.
Child health expert Innes Asher says implementing the group’s recommendations would have significantly reduced the damage done to children and those on welfare by Covid restrictions.
She says while the government has increased benefits, those families have missed out on Working for Families payments which are tied to low-paid jobs.
Professor Asher says having one in four New Zealand children living in poverty was seen as unacceptable three years ago, and the situation today is even worse.
