Taipa hurry-along from rangatahi

One of the pākeke involved in the occupation of a Taipa site is crediting the leadership of the iwi’s younger member for its success.
The crown has agreed to buy the 0.8 hectare block to landbank for an eventual settlement.
Hone Bassett from Ngāti Tara says the five-week noho whenua was designed to be peaceful and respectful.
It was a challenge not just to the crown but to the iwi leadership.
“A lot of them don’t want to wait 30 years or 20 years for a settlement, they want to move forward for the benefit of their children’s children, so I believe our young people played a very big part in securing this land,” Mr Bassett says.
