Otene invaluable mentor for principals

A Whangārei principal who has provided invaluable support for others has won a tohu for leadership and mentoring in this year’s National Excellence in Teaching Awards.
Leanne Otene from Te Rarawa heads Manaia View School.
Judges said good mentoring is one of the key determinants for young teachers staying in the profession, and it’s also a hallmark of a true professional to give their knowledge and experience to enrich the next generation of teachers.
Ms Otene has also shared her knowledge by appearing as a keynote speaker for Australian Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander conferences.
Judges also highlighted her leadership in the Covid response, not only in her own school and region but in her appointment to a nationwide group of principals brought together to monitor the government’s advice to principals.
