Ngāti Kahu Rūnanga head Makere Mutu says the Department of Conservation is unable to enforce vaccine mandates.

The far north iwi has vetoed the reopening of DOC’s Maitai Bay camping ground on the Karikari Peninsula because vaccination rates in the area are still under 60 percent.

Professor Mutu says over the summer the camp gets overwhelmed with hundreds of holidaymakers, many of them unbooked, and there are only two DOC staff on site.
