The Waitangi National Trust’s decision to cancel in-person events at the Treaty Grounds won’t stop activities going on at the lower Te Tii Marae – if the marae and Ngā Hapū o Te Whakaminenga want to mark Waitangi Day.
Marae chair Isaiah Apiata says the decision was made without consultation with hapū and iwi.
He says the marae has always forged its own path and is a space for voices to be heard.
The hapū will meet before February to decide what will happen.
“People are supportive, people are non-supportive of what has been done but may I encourage rangatira to encourage their hapū to be vaccinated, thus creating a safe environment,” Mr Apiata says.
