It’s catch up time this year in the New Zealand Music Hall of Fame with five wāhine toa set to be inducted.
All five got their start in the early 1980s – Annie Crummer, Debbie Harwood, Dianne Swann, Margaret Urlich and Kim Willoughby.
Harwood says back then women were outnumbered in the music business 100 to one.
All five forged their careers with touring bands playing original music, before finding massive chart success as When the Cat’s Away – a fun covers band that paved the way for continued individual careers in music.
