There was dancing in the streets of Pukekohe yesterday as the Waipareira vax vans rolled into town.
Huakina Development Trust tūmuaki Maria Clarke says that was enough to draw many hard to reach whānau out of their homes, with 193 people taking a vaccine shot, the majority for the first time.
With the vans also going to Tuakau and Waiuku, more than 300 people were vaccinated.
“It’s been really hard out in Pukekohe, not because of the whānau but because the messages coming out from Health haven’t been resonating, they’re tired of hearing it. But now we have Covid in our area we are more open and they are testing and they are arriving at vaccination,” Ms Clarke says.
She says it was welcome support for the local teams, and she doesn’t expect any problems following up for the second vaccination around Christmas eve.
