Texts tell unvaxxed Māori surge is coming
More than 100 kaimahi from Te Whānau o Waipareira are heading southside this week for a vaccination surge – and the people know they’re coming.
Chief executive John Tamihere says with less than four weeks to Christmas, Whānau Ora partners are racing to get as many people as possible at least partially vaccinated.
They’re now armed with data on unvaccinated Māori, which is being drip fed by the Health Ministry after a High Court challenge.
“We’ve been able to drop text messages to them and we have also been able to identify where the hot spots are where we should concentrate our services so we will be doing that in Manurewa today, Papakura and then on Wednesday Pukekohe, Tuakau, Waiuku and through there, there’s about 2500 unvaccinated Māori through there, and if we get a couple of hundred a day that’s 200 more than we would have got anyway,” Mr Tamihere says.
He says the Whānau Ora Commissioning Agency won’t get data for Taranaki and Tairāwhiti until next week and other areas after that, leaving providers little time to reach people before the Christmas shut-down.
