Whanganui iwi are asking whānau to stay away during the holidays if they can.
Ngā Tāngata Tiaki o Whanganui chief executive Nancy Tuaine says some communities in the rohe are yet to reach a 50 percent vaccination rate.
The area’s health system is also under-resourced, and if Covid were to take off critical cases would have to be relocated out of town.
“We’re really worried that if it does come we won’t have the resources within our district health board, they’ll have to go somewhere else, and that puts stress on the other parts of the system, so just really concerned and trying to be as prepared as possible,” Ms Tuaine says.
