Otago graduates swell Māori medical ranks
A record number of Māori medical graduates is set to graduate from Otago University.
The 120-strong cohort includes doctors, dentists, physical therapists, radiology therapists, pharmacists and laboratory scientists.
Ahorangi Professor Joanne Baxter says the large number of Māori students coming through reflects more than a decade of effort to recruit and sustain tauira Māori.
‘It’s been a many personed, multipronged set of initiatives, but all very much centred in Māori values, so whanaungatanga, manaakitanga, kotahitanga, and maximising the amazing contribution that students will make towards each other.’ She says.
