Ngāti Kuri returns to Rangitāhua

Ngāti Kuri has used the collection of mātauranga to assert its status as mana whenua of the Kermadec Islands.
As part of Te Mana o Rangitāhua, a five-year research programme led by the country’s northernmost iwi in partnership with Auckland Museum and funded by the Ministry of Business, Innovation, Employment’s Endeavour Fund, a 10-member team has spent four days on Rangitāhua/ Raoul island before making the three-day journey back.
Expedition and science lead Tammy Tauroa says it echoes a similar voyage 20 years ago by the iwi and shows a commitment as researchers and as iwi and mokopuna to the island.
Evidence collected will be turned into tools for iwi-led management and conservation leadership.
