The opening of Whangārei’s Hundertwasser Art Centre and Wairau Māori Art Gallery has been delayed until next year because of COVID-induced delays.

Wairau Gallery chair Elizabeth Ellis says the gallery will open with a ceremony on February 19, the anniversary of the Austrian artist’s death in 2000.

The gallery’s first show is Puhi Ariki, curated by Nigel Borrell, profiling the work of nine Māori artists with a connection to Northland, from first-generation modernists to more recent contemporary art stars.
