Māori population swells
Māori now make up 17.1 percent of the total population according to new estimates from Statistics New Zealand.
That’s 439,300 females and 436,000 males, a total of 875,300.
The Māori population grew 2.4 percent in the year to June 30, or 20,900 people.
That compares with overall population growth of 0.6 percent.
Natural increase or births minus deaths was 13,150.
The other 7000 reflects net migration and net inter-ethnic mobility, or those changing their ethnic identification to include Māori minus those no longer including Māori in their ethnic identification.
The median ages for Māori males and females were 25.3 and 27.3 years respectively, compared with national median ages of 36.7 and 38.8 years.
