Kura to stay closed for Covid risk
All schools can return to on-site learning from Wednesday – but one south Auckland school isn’t taking up the offer.
Te Wharekura o Manurewa principal Maahia Nathan says the board is sticking with its decision to keep the doors of both the kura closed to pupils until Auckland returns to level 2 conditions.
He says the health and safety of tauira is the most important factor.
“Manurewa is a place of interest so we are one of the five or six communities that have been identified. Māori as an ethnic group are probably the highest in terms of the number of cases presenting and we are a Māori kura, I think it is good some schools are opening but there is a risk to that and we have decided we won’t be reopening until we move to level 2,” Mr Nathan says.
He says the kura will continue with online lessons, and it will also make use of the unexpected event grading process being offered for senior students.
