Mateparae shares leadership secrets
Former Governor General Sir Jerry Mateparae has been appointed patron of the Institute for Strategic Leadership.
The then Brigadier Mateparae attended the institute’s first week-long leadership course 20 years ago, shortly before being appointed Chief of the New Zealand Army in 2002.
He says the programme taught him that leadership is endurance, and it’s about those who lead and those who follow.
Hearing from people you trust about what makes a good leader is invaluable.
“Leadership is about people and their attitudes and values – and you will be a successful leader if you know your purpose,” he says.
Institute founder Geoff Lorigan says as organisations navigate through lockdown and prepare for post-lockdown, Sir Jerry’s extensive experience and his continuous positive attitude will be valued by leaders looking for a reset.
