Treaty texts earn PM’s Award
Dame Claudia Orange, whose books of the Treaty of Waitangi have helped generations of New Zealanders better understand the nation’s foundation document, has been awarded a Prime Minister’s Award for Literary Achievement.
Dame Claudia also served as the general editor of the five-volume Dictionary of New Zealand Biography, and is currently a research associate at the Museum of New Zealand Te Papa Tongarewa for many years.
Anne Kennedy won the poetry award and the fiction award went to David Hill.
The awards include a $60,000 payment.
The winners will take part in an online literary panel next Tuesday evening hosted by Paul Diamond, where they will also be joined by this year’s Creative New Zealand Michael King Writer’s Fellowship winner, historian Dr Monty Soutar.
