Recycling jobs fast track to economic recovery

The Southern Initiative wants government funding for a surge of investment into recycling businesses in south and west Auckland.
Tania Pouwhare, the acting general manager at Auckland Council’s social and economic innovation unit which is responsible for the initiative, says while there is a huge amount of Covid-19 recovery money going into the regions through programmes like Jobs for Nature, there is nothing for the city with the largest Māori and Pasifika populations.
She says there are already a lot of Māori firms working in the regenerative and circular economy.
“If we just give them a little bit more gas they’ll be able to scale up really quickly, go into new markets, pivot into new products and services that they can add and if we did that, then they’d be able to create more decent jobs for our whānau and aiga,” Ms Pouwhare says.
The plan also calls for a separate fund to help start up businesses.
