Waitangi or bust protest no hīkoi

Māori Party co-leader Debbie Ngarewa Packer says Māori should stay away from fighting and disharmony over vaccinations provoked by right wing Pākehā.
Cars belonging to the so-called Sovereign Hīkoi of Truth caused traffic disruption at Auckland’s southern border this morning as they tried to get through the city to go on to Waitangi.
More cars coming from within Northland were stopped near Kawakawa, with Taitokerau checkpoint coordinator Hone Harawira describing hīkoi organisers as Pākehā anti-vaxers trying to take over He Whakaputanga commemorations.
Ms Ngarewa Packer says challenges to the crown are fine at the right time and place.
“Now’s not the time to be trying to advance on a region that is doing everything it can in Taitokerau to keep their whānau safe. We have Māori saying do not bring that walk into our takiwā – that’s not a hīkoi,” she says.
