Tukutuku Toi kits hooked

The first run of a home tukutuku hobby kit has sold out within an hour of its release.
The Tukutuku Toi Kit is the idea of far north trainee teacher Awhina Murupaenga, who started her Whatu Creative business after seeing the interest in her pegboard and fibre system at a Matariki event at her Kaitaia kura.
To make the threading process simple for little hands, she delved into her husband’s fishing tackle.
“We give you this particular tool, we’ve named it the pene, and it’s actually a modified fishing clip from my tane’s mahi. We tested 10 different pins from crochet hooks to needles, and the fishing clip was the best one,” she says.
Awhina Murupaenga is encouraging buyers to post up pictures of their creations, and she’s also working on the Whatu Creative website and the next run of kits for the Christmas market.
