Vaccine mandate triggers distrust

We’ll do it – just don’t make us do it.
That’s the response from Te Tai Tokerau checkpoint coordinator Reuben Taipari to the requirement all health workers and teachers need to be vaccinated for COVID-19 if they are to continue working in public or student-focused roles.
He says that’s a message that will upset many Māori, and undermines the work they are doing to get their people to vaccinate.
“We were going fine without the mandate. We had communication and marketing plans to put the vaccine out there and for our people to make a decision because we still have our own tino rangatiratanga and we have been fighting so hard for our sovereignty we can’t consent to trust anything the government gives,” Mr Taipari says.
