The principal of a south Auckland secondary school says he’s relieved the Government is mandating Covid vaccinations for school staff.

Covid-19 Response Minister Chris Hipkins announced yesterday all school and early learning staff and support people who have contact with children and students must have their first doses by November 15 and be fully vaccinated by the end of the year.

High-risk workers in the health and disability sector need to be fully vaccinated by December 1, which means they will need to have a first dose by the end of this month.

Maahia Nathan from Te Wharekura o Manurewa says while individuals have a right to refuse vaccination, his concern has to be for the wider school community.

“Somewhere down the line they are going to have to make a hard call around whether or not they continue to work in a sector that directly impacts on the health and safety of our children. The health and safety of our children is paramount. I’m pushing to get as many of my kaimahi vaccinated as possible,” he says.

Mr Nathan says while he expects some push back, he has the backing of his board.
