Ngāti Toa set to go alone on new Porirua suburb
Te Rūnanga o Toa Rangatira has bought out its partner in the Kenepuru Landing development, giving the iwi end-to-end control of the construction of the new suburb on part of the former Porirua psychiatric hospital.
Chief cxecutive Helmut Modlik says the new agreement with Tauranga firm Carrus Corporation means Ngāti Toa and partners will oversee and build at least 450 houses throughout the remaining stages.
He says the acquisition will contribute to the rūnanga’s vision of Ngāti Toa as a strong, vibrant and influential iwi.
By retaining the whenua in iwi ownership and providing ground lease opportunities to iwi members to build their homes on, it expects to cut the upfront cost of home ownership by up to 40 percent.
Ngāti Toa and Carrus Kenepuru Limited have been in partnership for five years.
