Tangi part of National’s COVID plan
National will this morning release its alternate approach to managing COVID, with deputy leader Shane Reti indicating its thrust is now suppression rather than elimination.
It comes after just eight new cases yesterday, and the Government announcing a pilot for some types of returnees to self-isolate at home – something businesses have been calling for.
Dr Reti says instead of aiming for zero cases, Labour needs to accept there is likely to be a number of cases every day and make plans for that being the new normal.
And rather than the lottery for booking slots in MIQ, National would have a needs-based points system.
“So rather than the random allocation, toss a coin, that is the situation at the moment, we would prioritise it on a points basis just like Immigration New Zealand’s migration into New Zealand and that would put a tangi or a kawe mate in front of a holiday,” he says.
National will release its policy with a live stream around 9.30am.
