Māori housing strategy needs on the ground delivery
A Māori architectural and urban designer hopes a new Māori housing strategy works better than the last one.
Jade Kake says the previous He Whare Āhuru strategy put up by the National-Māori Party Government was greeted with excitement by Māori housing advocates, but there were no resources to implement it.
She says a lot has changed with the current Government including Maihi, the Māori and iwi housing innovation framework for action.
The Maihi Ka Ora strategy turns that framework into a whole of system approach led by the Ministry of Housing and Urban Development.
“They’ve got a critical role of interfacing and working with Māori providers, iwi entities. They are doing a lot of that on the ground support and then linking back to government and have been very responsive so I am confident with the infrastructure that has been put in place in government, that this will be followed through as opposed to being a lovely document that nothing happens with,” Ms Kake says.
