Mangatangi leak raises Covid spread fear

Three cases of Covid in a family at just south of the Auckland boundary are a timely reminder of how challenging the delta variant is, according to Hauraki Waikato MP Nanaia Mahuta.
Mangatangi School, where one of the children attended while symptomatic last Thursday, is closed today, and there is a pop up testing centre at Wharekawa Marae in Whakatīwai.
Ms Mahuta says it’s an example of the long tail the Prime Minsiter has been talking about in discussions on whether Auckland can emerge from level 4 lockdown.
“The fact it is in the Mangatangi area doesn’t limit the potential of spread across the community because my understanding is part of the area as being the Hauraki region, not in lockdown like Auckland, and it is likely there has been a lot of travel to get kai and all of that”.
Cabinet will make the decision this afternoon on whether to bring Auckland down to level 3 at midnight Tuesday.
