Iwi experience helps in vocational training job


The Hanga-Aro-Rau workforce development council, which will represent manufacturing, engineering and logistics industries in the new vocational education system, has appointed Phil Alexander-Crawford as is first chief executive.
Mr Alexander-Crawford, from Ngāti Hine, Ngāti Rēhia and Ngāpuhi, is currently the director of Te Pae Tawhiti – the Māori equity partnership at the polytech and vocational training sector body Te Pūkenga.
He has previously worked with and for iwi and hapū, including as education manager for Ngātiwai Trust Board and director of development for NorthTec.
He says he comes from a whānau that has been helped to succeed through vocational education.
The workforce development councils come into effect on October 4 and will set standards, develop qualifications and shape the curriculum of vocational education.
