Only target 100 percent
Associate Health Minister Peeni Henare says the Government want to avoid setting false targets for vaccination.
Some Opposition politicians and commentators are calling for targets such as the one set by Australian Prime Minister Scott Morrison, who says he will open the country up again when 70 percent or 80 percent of the population over 16 is vaccinated.
Mr Henare says New Zealand’s vaccination numbers are on track, including for Māori with 30 percent of the eligible Māori populations now having received at least one dose and 20 percent getting both doses.
"We're really careful not to set a particular target because you are either held to account or worse, it's a false target. Everyone who is eligible should get vaccinated and the only reason you shouldn't get vaccinated is you have a medical condition which means you can't. We are on a push for everyone to get vaccinated, 12 plus, haere," he says.
Mr Henare says the delta outbreak has increased awareness of the need to vaccinate, and numbers are growing
