Police roll out reassurance patrols to enforce bubbles
Deputy Police Commissioner Wally Haumaha says there’s no call for iwi road checks in the current lockdown – and in fact, with Delta COVID on the loose they’re a bad idea.
Police yesterday asked an unauthorised road check at Manaia to stand down and took over the task of stopping outsiders from heading on to the Coromandel Peninsula.
Mr Haumaha says he has also talked with iwi leaders in Taitokerau and other parts of the country who have previously run checkpoints.
“Because of the speed and the acceleration of this virus, from here on in the police will be taking high-visibility patrols, reassurance patrols, making sure there isn’t inter-regional travel, people staying in their bubble, and as the Prime Minister has been reiterating, for people to stay home and stay safe,” he says.
